Single Camera Production

Introduction
Single camera is when you one camera to produce a video and the shots are done in a careful and efficient order. There are advantages and disadvantages of using single camera. Advantages: It’s cheaper than using multiple cameras because you will only need one camera, which means you won’t need to buy a lot of equipment. Also when you are only using one camera you have more control over what’s going. This is important because you need to have control over the production and sure the scenes and shots are in the right order. Another advantage of using single camera is that it’s easy get from one place, which means that you can use more location simultaneously.

Also the quality of the video will be the same because you will be using the same camera. There are disadvantages of single camera production is that you can only get one angle at a time because you are only using one camera so this will be more time consuming because it will take a lot of time if you want different types of angle for your video. Another disadvantage would be that since you’re only using one camera it will time to edit the footage because a lot of the film will be on one camera. Examples of single camera TV shows which fall into different categories which are comedy (Frasier), sci-fi (The Big Bang Theory) , crime (CSI), teen (Hollyoaks), thriller( The X Files), and period drama (Downton Abbey).

Todorov's Theory (Narrative)
Tzevetan Todorov is a philisopher who is from Bulgaria. In the year 1969 Todorov thought and produced a theory about films. He believed that this theory was applied to any and all films and that they all followed a same narrative pattern. The pattern was that they all go through different stages which were equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement and then solving and then equilibrium.

The number of stages that a narrative can progress through is five; which are:

1. A state of equilibrium. (This is when everything is normal and as it should be.)
2. A disruption of that order by an event. (This is when an event occurs which creates a problem.)
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred. (This is when it’s realised that a problem has occurred.)
4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption. (This is when they try to resolve the problem.)
5. A return or restoration of a new equilibrium. (This is when everything’s back to normal after the problem has been resolved.)

Single strand narrative/Multi-strand narrative
A single stand narrative is when a story is told from only one person’s point of view. It is focused on a single person or character, an example of single stand narrative would movies like Spiderman or Batman. Multi-strand narrative is when a story is being told from more than one person’s point of view. Also it could be two stories of two different people which intervene or come together. An example of this would be TV soaps like Eastenders because it has more than one story. Also Coronation Street because it ends one story and begins another without confusing the audience.

Linear/Non-linear
Linear is when a film or show is in a chronological order. This means everything is in order and it has a beginning, middle and an end in that order. Non-linear when a film or a show is not in order and switches from one place to another and could have flashbacks. For example in movies if someone is sitting at home watching TV the next will be him sitting in a totally different place doing something else. Examples of non-linear movies would be Sin City and Kill Bill.

Comedy (Frasier)
The lighting for that has been used in this program is natural lighting because most of time is spent indoors in the house and when they outside they make the image brighter to make it easier to see. The sound that is used in this program is mostly music in the background, for example is everything is calm then the music will be at normal speed but if something existing is happening then the music will speed up. This sets the mood and also creates tension. The camera angles that are used in this programs are a wide range of shots which include close up shots when it’s only focusing on one person. Also there are medium shots when it shows them having dinner as a family and there are some long shots when they show the house.

Sci-fi (The Big Bang Theory)
The lighting for this program is all natural which means that there are no special effects or additional lighting used. The sound that is used in this program is both dietetic and non-dietetic. This is because there are people laughing in the background as well as people talking and other natural sounds such the door closing. A wide range of camera shots are used in this program. For example when its focusing on person it’s a close up and medium shots used there is a group of people.
