Task 1
Introduction
The aim of this unit is to develop an
understanding of research skills which are relevant to creative media
production. You will present your research in written an oral form and also
will learn how to cite and reference you source.
Primary research is when someone does
their own research. They research about a subject form starch. Examples of
primary research would questionnaires, surveys and focus groups. This has many
advantages such as you find out for yourself if the information is reliable or
not because some information that you find on the internet might not be true.
Media companies will do research to find out information from their customers
and other members of the public. For example if the media production wants to
make short clips and they want the views of the audience they can use primary
research to get the views and the ideas of public.
For example I can look at
questionnaire about movies and TV shows and see what response people give such
as how many people prefer horror than comedy. Also look at what type of
questions to ask such as open or closed question wheatear its better to have a
scale response or leave it open to get their personal and detailed response.
The disadvantage of an open question is that they might be in a rush and not
right their honest opinion. The advantage with scale questioners is that you
can narrow it down and see which one the public prefers the most.
Experimentation: This is when the
media industry tries something new and sees how it works out. This could have a
positive or a negative impact on the industry depending on if people watch it
or not and whether or not they like it. For example BBC 1 might want to
introduce a new show and see if the public like it not. They will experiment to
see what improvements are needed before allowing it on TV to get those
improvements they will carry out research using questionnaire and surveys and
see what people think about it.
The advantages of trying new ideas is
that they might turn out be successful and which will make the business
successful and increase its reputation. Experimenting new ideas is a good way
to try them out for example a media company might decide to produce a new TV
show and there not sure that its ready for live TV so they will try it out such
as get people to watch and rate it get judges and experts opinion to make that
its perfect and will attract the maximum amount of audience. The disadvantages
of experimentation is that it might not be successful and it will also cost a
lot of money and if it doesn’t work then the business’s money is just wasted
which could have been used elsewhere.
Observation: This is
when media companies will get employees to observe people and see how they
react to the different types of shows they watch. Also they can observe which
CDs and DVDs they purchase they most and ask them why. The advantage of this is
that its 100% response rate because they can look at what is happening and see
what improvement needs to be made. Panels: This
is when people observe the movies or TV shows and see what technique it uses to
attract its audience. For in a media production experts will observe a movie
see what’s good about it, what can be improved and also is it suitable for the
age recommended.
Another example would be focus
groups. This is when they get a group of people who don't know each other and
get them to analyses and focus on a certain subject and see what ideas and
views they have to offer. They can use questionnaires to people’s opinions as
well the advantages of using the questionnaire that it won’t cost that much and
you will be able to get a wide range of ideas and opinion. The disadvantage of
suing a questionnaire is that it’s very time consuming because you will have to
get lots of people to fill in the questionnaire and then analyse the results.
I can also use surveys to get ideas
form people. If the surveys are carried out online such as using survey monkey
then it easy to get more ideas and answers form the surveys because its online
and having an online presence will have a positive effects you will be able to
reach a wide range of people and audience. Using primary research has its
advantages and disadvantage. The disadvantage is that when doing a
questionnaire people might in a rush so they won’t have time to answer lots of
question and think about them so the answers won’t be accurate.
The advantages of this is they can use survey
monkey which is faster to fill in and more efficient because it’s all done
on-line so it’s easy to edit and update. For example I can look at similar
surveys and see what technique they have used what types of questions and what
response did they get back. Using survey monkey I will be able to get a range
of opinion because I will have an online presence as well as it will be more efficient
because it’s all done electronically.
Secondary research
Secondary research is when you carry
out research using information that someone else has already found. Examples of
secondary research would be getting information from the Internet, books and
magazines. Using the Internet will have its advantages and disadvantages. The
advantages would be that you could find lots of information because people can
access from anywhere so there are lots of ideas that can be used without you
having to do any work.
The disadvantages of using the
Internet are that people can also upload false information on it so the
information you get can be unreliable as well the information might not be up
to date. Also using book has a disadvantage because most of the books are old
so the information won’t be up to date because most of the work is done using
the internet. Using secondary research has its advantages such as it takes less
time to gather the research because you are just taking it from different
sources such as internet and books. The disadvantages are some information
might not be reliable or true.
Another example of secondary research
would be news articles because newspapers will know will what types of shows
and films the public prefer and they will have experts doing their research on
the public to get their opinions. This is an advantage because you can use
their newspapers articles and get the information and you its reliable because
newspapers pay their reporters to carry out research so you are using experts
work to carry out your own research.
You can use TV magazines to get
information about what types of programs the public reads about and watches such
as if people horror or comedy magazines. Also I can look at the sales figures
and see which genera sold the most copies. I can also see the DVD sales figures
to see which ones sold the most copies. This will help to choose which genera I
should choose for my short clip. For I can look at websites like the RAJAR and
get ideas for there. The website has statistical information about the latest releases
so I can which movies and genre the like and what percentage of the audience
like different genre. I can look at TV magazines and see which type TV show the
audience prefer.
Quantitative& Qualitative
Quantitative research is when
research is carried out using facts and figures, which are then backed up by
examples for the research. For example researching what type of shows and
program people watch on TV. This is important because the research will be
shown and then it will be backed up by fact so you know it’s true and reliable.
Also figures will be used because if the media department wants to find out what
percentage of people watch a certain show they will use quantitative research. The
advantage of using Quantitative research is that you can get a wide range of
answers and have them in percentages but the disadvantages of this is that it’s
hard to narrow it down because of high percentage of answers you will get. For
example quantitative research will be things like DVD sales figures, another
example would be a report about the percentage of audience certain movies or TV
shows.
Qualitative research is when research is
carried out mostly using facts. This is when lots of words are used as well as
examples to back up the research such as using books, articles and the
Internet. So if the media production wants to find what type of shows the
public prefer they can research that using book and magazines without using
figures and statistics. For example researching about a subject using mostly
facts and words rather than figures percentages.
Sources of research
RAJAR
This website gives you information
and statistics about the latest releases. Also it informs you about what
percentage of the world listens to radio. It’s also given you up to date news
about the latest about music. The users can also download the RAJAR app for the
phone. This can be useful because most of the people have phones and it will be
easier for them to do their research on the phone and they will have their
phone with them everywhere they go.
BARB

magazines and newspapers. The website is easy to use because the layout is
simple and the information on it is organised and easy to read. Also another
positive feature about this website is that the users can choose the file
format which you want to open it with, this is for the links which are on the
website, file formats like word or PowerPoint.
Task 2
Research strategy
For my media assignment I will use primary research because I will need
to find out what movies people prefer and different genres. This is good
quality research because it’s reliable information. I will use questionnaire to
uncover information and ideas form people and then that information will
finalize what features will include in the short film. Also the questionnaire
will be analyzed for further information and this will give me more ideas on
the short film because it will be made using the ideas of the audience and what
they prefer.
I will be analysing a range of
different research methods which will include secondary and primary research.
I will use questionnaires because I will need
to find out the target audience for my production and make it suitable for
them. In my questionnaire I will include open question as well as closed ones
this is because I want to get a wide range of opinion and get a clear
understanding of what they prefer. When doing primary
research I will be using questionnaire to get opinion and ideas about the
movies and how to produce. Also I will do a survey and see what type of movies,
TV shows people prefer this is because if I know what they prefer then I will
make sure to include that in my clip. Also I can interview people and ask them
in detail about their movie interests, TV and what genres they like.
Also I can hold a focus group and get
a wide range of different opinion and get if people can back up their opinion
and say why they like certain genres then I can use that to make the perfect
movie. I
will look at the internet and see the previous films and see how well they have
done and get ideas on how to make a good clip. Also I can get information on
movies websites like Box office and see if someone has carried out research in
the past and their results and how I can use that to my advantage. Also I can
check which genre movies were sold the most by checking DVD sales figures.
Looking at all this will help me because I will be able to get an idea on how
to produce my single camera shot because I will be able to get ideas on how to
make a perfect movie using the techniques which are used by professional.
Research log
Questionnaire
The information that is
shown in the table is one of the main questions that was answered in the
questionnaire. The question 'What is your preferred genre?' is important as it
will allow for the film to be made to the preferences of the audience. Other
questions like 'What is your age?' is also very important as it will allow for
the audience to be decided well and to allow for an enjoyable short film. From
the questionnaire we also discovered that the bulk of the action films were
liked by males. The horror and comedy genres were of a mix which is why we
decided our film to be a comedy film.
Schedule
In terms of time
management we decided that the majority of the time we are allotted will be
used to shoot the actual the film and the editing process. The reason for this
is because the shooting of the film has to be made to a certain degree of
accuracy and has to be correct the first time. The editing is important as it
will make it easier for corrections to be made in the film, if there were any
mistakes made during the filming.
The other procedures must
also be considered, like the planning of the short film, the rehearsals of the
short film and the marketing of the single camera short film. The time that we
would use is approximately 6-7 weeks. All the planning and gathering of the
research will take about 2 week, the actual production will take about 3 weeks
and the editing phase will take about 2 weeks. Keeping a track of time is
important in a production project as all the deadlines need to be met for the
final product to be of good quality.
Budget proposal
The budget proposal is
the different expenditures that will be made to allow for the production of our
short film. Things like cameras, tripods, location and editing programs will
have to be purchased; having a plan for all the cost of the equipments will
allow all the right equipment to be purchased. The most important part of the
expenditure will be purchasing the correct and high quality editing program.
The reason that this was decided to be the most important is because editing
the film at the end will allow for the film to be changed in any way. This
means that the film can be made better using the editing program, which is why
it is prioritized over the other equipments.
The cost for the cameras
will be approximately £200-300. This will allow for the film to be recorded and
uploaded to the editing program. The cost for the tripods will be approximately
£100-150. This will allow for steady and still shots to be made and will keep
the camera in place for a long duration of time. The cost of the editing
program will be approximately - £100-500. This high price range is expensive,
but will allow the film to be edited to a high degree of accuracy. The location
will have to be in such a place that it could allow us to make our comedy short
film. This could be a place like a house, or even a circus. Renting this kind
of property would approximately cost - £60-100. The overall cost that we are
looking at is approximately £460-1050.
